As with everything with street photography, there are days when literally nothing goes your way. When you oversleep, when you miss the bus, when you forget your keys… These things happen and they don’t only happen with things that are out of our control. We are living organisms and our emotional and physical state isn’t the same every single day of our lives. The hormones our brains release are affected by a lot of things: the way you slept, what you had for dinner, when you had dinner and many more. That happens.
Well, I’ve had a lot of days like that, as I’m sure a lot of you have as well. I end up being annoyed or just feeling blue and sometimes even feeling like I’m no good. Well, that’s ok. It’s ok to not feel like you’re not yourself, it’s ok to take it easy and to have a slow day. We’re people after all…
As street photography can be a form of self-expression, these days usually affect it big time. Nothing really inspires you, you don’t see the beauty (or ugliness) in anything, you don’t really feel anything or feel like what you do is bringing you any pleasure. It sucks but that’s life. The only thing left to do is to enjoy the ride. You’re already outside. With spring just around the corner as of the moment of writing this, there’s a big chance that the weather will be good (or at least not terrible) so just take it as a walk. Feel the sound of the city, see the people in a hurry or just walk around with your headphones on. Just take it easy on yourself. You don’t HAVE to take the shot of your life this exact day. Cut yourself some slack.
