Being a creative means that every now and then you will feel like all your work lately is just bad. That’s completely normal, it only means that you’re growing, you’re probably on the way to changing your style and the work you’re used to producing doesn’t satisfy you anymore.
I’ve also been there. I’ve been to the point where I feel like I’ve just gotten lucky to take the photos I like and that every other photographer, given the opportunity would have taken them, if not even better. It felt like I wouldn’t be able to take a decent shot for the life of me. Well, that is also normal, as every creative goes through it.
In my case, what I did when that happened was, I sold my 50mm and bought a 35mm lens. It’s not a big change but the slightly wider angle meant I had to compose my shots differently, I had to get more personal and closer to my subjects. It also meant that I could use the slightly distorted image that said lens produces, also there was no way I was going to get as much bokeh as the 50. Basically, it challenged me.
What can also work (when not amidst a world pandemic) is traveling somewhere you’ve never been before just to feel the different vibe, see the different light, even hear the different language. While you’re there there’s no way you are going to take the same shots, you do at home.
For me, this moment came when I was doing the 365 challenge, so I really needed a bit of a change. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any trips planned out to continue taking a photo every day so that’s why I just stopped for a while. What should always be remembered is that photography is supposed to
